The Silent SmoothWall™ Router

The Silent SmoothWall™ Router project is our first foray into the world of the Mini-ITX motherboards. It's an attempt to make a SmoothWall™ based router that is both fan-less and has no moving parts. This means a motherboard with no CPU fan, a power supply with no fan and no hard drive either.
The project is on the verge of completion. All that's required is a case for the system. I'm having a bit of trouble on that point because I want it to have a nice case, but at the same time I don't want to spend a lot of money on it.
| Components | Price |
|---|---|
| Mini-ITX motherboard 533Mhz fan-less | $100 |
| 64MB DIMM ram | * |
| DLink PCI ethernet card | $15 |
| 256MB compact flash card | $70 |
| CF-IDE adapter | $30 |
| ITX power supply daughter-board | $70 |
| case ???? | $15 |
| Total | $300 |

Initial testing of the router while mounted inside a standard ATX case. It's also using a regular hard drive at the this point.

Closer view showing how huge the DIMM is. It's even taller than the PCI ethernet card. IDE and ATX power cable in the foreground.

More of a top down view. The CPU heat sink is in the bottom-middle of the image. Notice that there's no fan. it also barely gets warm to the touch.

The finished router except for the case. The CF card visible in the upper left under the ATX to DC power converter. The PCI ethernet adapter has had it's mounting bracket removed (only 2 screws).
